India Canada News LIVE Updates

India Canada News LIVE Updates: An unnamed Canadian official today told The Associated Press that they have surveillance intelligence on India's involvement in the killing of a the Khalistani leader as well as intelligence from a member of the “Five Eyes” alliance. However, the person did not name which member of the alliance gave the evidence to Canada.

Earlier today, Canada said that acts of aggression, hate, intimidation or incitement of fear have no place in the country amid the circulation of an online video in which Hindu Canadians are told to leave the country.

Earlier, a Canadian official familiar with the situation informed The Associated Press on Thursday that the accusation regarding India's potential involvement in the killing of a Sikh Canadian is grounded in surveillance activities conducted on Indian diplomats in Canada. This information includes intelligence received from a significant ally within the "Five Eyes" intelligence-sharing alliance, which comprises the United States, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to a lack of authorization to publicly discuss the matter, revealed that the communications under scrutiny involved Indian officials and Indian diplomats stationed in Canada. Specific details of the intelligence source or the contents of these communications, as well as the methods used to acquire them, were not disclosed.

The initial report on this intelligence was made by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. In response to these developments, India took measures to halt the issuance of visas to Canadian citizens and requested a reduction in Canada's diplomatic personnel. This escalation in tensions between the previously close allies stems from Ottawa's allegations suggesting New Delhi's potential involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a 45-year-old Sikh separatist, in a Vancouver suburb in June. Relations between the two nations have reached their lowest point in years following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's statement on Monday regarding "credible allegations" of Indian involvement in the assassination.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who had obtained Canadian citizenship in 2007 after being born in India, had been sought by Indian authorities for an extended period before his fatal shooting outside the temple he led in the city of Surrey.

Addressing the complex diplomatic situation during the U.N. General Assembly on Thursday, Prime Minister Trudeau acknowledged the challenges at hand. He stated, "The decision to share these allegations on the floor of the House of Commons was not taken lightly. There is no doubt that India is a country of growing importance and a country with which we must continue to collaborate."

India Canada News LIVE Updates: Dialogue only solution, says Punjab MP Sahney on India-Canada ties

Member of Parliament from Punjab, Vikramjit Singh Sahney, on Friday responded to Indian political dispute with Canada by saying "he always strongly believe dialogue is the only solution to every diplomatic problem". Sahney expressed concern on the statement of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his exaggerated allegation on India.

"Instead of giving a public statement and deporting a senior Indian diplomat without substantiate premises to it, he should have initiated a dialogue with India via diplomatic channels on his concerns or doubts about any interference of India in any of the action on their sovereign soil," Sahney said in a statement. He also requested the government of India that hostilities "lead us nowhere".

"Shutting down the issuance of visas is not a prudent step at all. There are lakhs of Punjabis who reside in Canada, one wrong step and they will have to face the collateral damage. Canadian Sikhs by and large are pro-India and can't be demeaned for the acts of a handful of fundamentalists," Sahney, who is also the International President of World Punjabi Organisation, said he has been in touch with many progressive Canadian MPs for peaceful resolution of this issue.
